Our ethos

Empowering every student

At the heart of our provision, is the desire to enable our pupils to build resilience, confidence and self-esteem.

We want to provide opportunities and experiences to young people who for whatever reason, feel that the system has failed them and have struggled in a mainstream setting. We want to coach these young people to value themselves, believe in themselves and to succeed int their own individual way. At Holton, we better prepare pupils for life after school.

Outdoor and Physical Education is the foundation of our approach and curriculum. We know that by taking pupils out of the classroom and enabling them to learn in a different way, in nature, we can begin to build resilience and show them that they can achieve, they can do anything they put their mind to, and that they do matter.

At Holton, we provide experiences that engage, motivate and create core skills to positively impact pupils both academically and socially. Pupils will have the opportunity to gain nationally recognised awards whilst also experiencing opportunities that they would not otherwise have been able to access.

We deliver lessons in a range of settings, often in the great outdoors, sometimes in the classroom, but sometimes in the garden or gym too. We have small-group, high staff ratio classroom teaching of English, Maths, Humanities, and PGW (Personal Growth and Wellbeing) all of which will follow a pathway toward appropriate accreditations. The final key element of our initial curriculum offer will be the use of targeted work experience to enable pupils to see a clear pathway to life after education and an opportunity to put into practice their developing social skills and test their readiness to take on a role in our wider society.

Today, we welcomed our second visit from an ex-pupil this week — and what a lovely reminder of how far we’ve come.

Alfie was our third ever pupil, and five years on, we’re now having a positive impact on over 100 pupils.

One of the things we’re most proud of is seeing our pupils return to visit staff and share their achievements. Today, Alfie dropped in to say hello and proudly hand out his business cards after successfully setting up his own business.

We couldn’t be prouder of him and everything he has achieved. 💙

Another fantastic success story and a brilliant example of what can happen when young people are given the right support, encouragement and opportunities.
Experiences like this fishing residential are hugely beneficial. They support personal development, strengthen positive relationships between pupils and staff, and create lasting memories that can be brought back into everyday school life.

A huge thank you to everyone who helped make the residential such a positive and memorable experience. 🎣👏
